THANKSGIVING FELLOWSHIP NEARS

It is now only four short weeks until time for the Thanksgiving Fellowship Meeting here at Landmark. We anticipate a record attendance this year, and pray that the Lord will use it to strengthen the lives of all who attend.
Services will begin at 10:00 A.M. November 22 and continue until noon on the 23rd. If we have early arrivals, we will even hear a visiting speaker in our Wednesday evening service.
Though no formal program has been prepared, it is hoped that we may hear from brethren: Leonard Garlington (La.); James Burks (Ca.); John Coleman (Ind.); James S. Mitchell (Colo.); Edward Byrd (Ark.) and Bob Melancen (Ill,) sometime during the meeting. None of these brethren have spoken at our last two meetings. It is hoped that we may also be able to hear from others.
We anticipate having a goodly number of young people in attendance.

WELCOME TO ALL!!

True fellowship with God will inevitably bring war-fare with this present world-system.

ATTENTION, ROCKFORD READERS!!

The CLARION HERALD is sent into several homes locally that are not directly associated with Landmark Church, but have manifested a desire to receive it. We are happy to be able to come into your homes in this manner, and trust that the paper is a blessing.
We never encourage members of other churches to leave their own services to attend ours. However, we would be delighted to have you visit with us during the special services to be held at Landmark on Thanksgiving Day.
In addition to this, we would be greatly pleased to have you participate in entertaining some of our out of town brethren who will be coming in for this Fellowship Meeting. If you have "sleeping space" where our guests could be more comfortable (than being crowded together into a very few homes), we would deeply appreciate your participation and Christian hospitality. Anyone desiring to assist in this may call me at New Milford 874-2265. THANK YOU! -- Eugene L. Garner

REST THAT IS REAL

To step out of self-life into Christ-life; to lie still and let Him lift you out of yourself; to fold your hands close and hide your face upon the hem of His robe; to let Him lay His cooling, soothing, healing hands upon your soul, and draw all the hurry and fever from its veins; to realize you are NOT a mighty messenger, an important worker of His, full of care and responsibility, but only a little child, with a Father's gentle bidding to heed and fulfill; to lay your busy plans and ambition confidently in His hands, as the child brings its broken toys at its mother's call; to learn to follow Him and not run ahead of orders .... This is consecration and this is REST.
Today Jesus invites every weary laborer to: "Come unto me....and I will GIVE you REST.!" Will YOU cast all your care upon Him, NOW?

AN UP-DATE ON MISSIONARY ADDRESSES

From time to time we attempt to provide a list of addresses that are most generally used by those receiving the CLARION HERALD. These brethren are all church sent, faith missionaries -- "recommended to the grace of God", and serving without any fixed or guaranteed income. In these perilous times it requires an unquestioning faith for a missionary to stay on the job under such circumstances. Let us faithfully support these brethren with our prayers and financial liberality.

ARNOLD'S TO CORINTH
Effective November 1, Brother Samuel D. Arnold, of Lexington, Kentucky, will assume the responsibility of "pastor" at the Corinth Missionary Baptist Church of Dry Prong, Louisiana.
Both pastor and people are dearly loved by this editor. Thus, it is his sincere desire that they may "strive together" for the furtherance of the Gospel; that they may be "one" in heart, mind, and purpose; and that our heavenly Father may be pleased to richly bless them as they labor together --- making them fruitful in every good work, to His own eternal praise & glory.
Bro. Arnold's going to Corinth leaves the Cave Hill MBC, of Lexington, without a pastor. It is our earnest prayer that God will provide for them a "shepherd" who will be able to lead them in paths of acceptable worship, praise and service.          -- Eugene Garner

A WEEK WITH ANTIOCH --- GREENCASTLE

During the week of October 8-14 it was my privilege to be with Pastor James McCoy and the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Greencastle, Indiana in a revival effort. The Lord was pleased to give us a

good time of fellowship together in the Word, and the heart of one young man was moved to become identified with that body of saints. He was baptized following the service on Sunday morning.
It was especially encouraging to have so many brethren visiting in those services from other churches. I think especially of several who came from the New Testament MBC in Indianapolis, the Cave Hill MBC of Lexington, Kentucky, and the Mt. Hebron MBC of Lancaster, Kentucky.
May the Lord continue to bless all these brethren as they labor together for the glory of Christ!
Thanks to brethren Melancen and Nunally who conducted the services at Landmark in my absence.         E.G.

PRAISE THE LORD!!

Surely praise fills our hearts as we rejoice together in the move made by Sister Roxanne Hill last Sunday evening. Having attended our services for several weeks, she came forward at the close of the service saying that she had asked the Lord to take control in every area of her life. Then she asked the church for Scriptural baptism -- expressing a desire to walk with the Lord in a life of service. Time for the baptismal service will be announced in the near future.
Let us continue to work, pray, witness and expect the Lord to bless abundantly. He is neither dead nor indifferent to the cries of His people!

Next issue we hope to carry more articles of a devotional nature.

ORDINATION SERVICE AT SANTA CRUZ

The following series of pictures were taken at Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo during the ordination of Bro. Waldemar de Souza to the office of deacon. They were taken and sent to the CLARION HERALD by Bro. Edgar R. Potter -- our missionary in Brazil.
Bro. Waldemar -- giving his personal testimony of Christian experience as Bro. Don Ross looks on.
Missionary pastor Steve Montgomery, laying hands on the candidate as Bro. Helmut of the Villa Espanhola church in Sao Paulo awaits his turn.

BUSINESS MEETING THIS SATURDAY
Our regular quarterly business meeting, postponed because of our revival services being in progress, is scheduled for this Saturday, October 27, at 7:00 P.M. Let every member make a special effort to be present!

A part or the crowd that attended this ordination service on Sept. 7.

Bro. Potter requests the prayers of brethren in behalf of the Santa Cruz work. He writes: "The devil is working hard to destroy the testimony of this church, as he has tried so often in the past. But we go forth to the battle with faith, knowing that Christ has won the victory".

    STUDIES IN THE GOSPELS

    "THE PROMISE OF A FORERUNNER"

    Scripture Lesson: Luke 1:1-25.
INTRODUCTION: THE PREFACE TO LUKE'S GOSPEL, (vs. 1-4).
Luke was not the first Gospel writer; others, who were both "eyewitnesses & ministers" had already done so, (Mk. 1:1; Jn. 15:27; Heb. 2:3; I Pet. 5:1; I Jn. 1:1). He wrote that "most excellent Theophilus" (suggesting a man of official rank, Acts 23:26; 24:3; 26:5) might be assured of the things he had been taught, Luke addressed this orderly treatise to him, (Acts 1:1; comp. Acts ll:4; 15:19; 25, 28).
THE SETTING: Jerusalem & the temple in the days of Herod.
    I. A BIRDSEYE VIEW OF A GODLY HOME, (Luke 1:5-7).
    1. ZECHARIAS (meaning "remembered by Jehovah", a priest, is the husband -- of the course of Abijah.
      1. This was the 8th course of priests, according to David's division, (I Chron. 24:1, 4, 10, 19).
      2. Only 4 of these courses returned from the captivity; they were once more divided into 24, (Ezra 2:36-39).
    2. ELISABETH ("God of the oath"), HIS WIFE, WAS OF AARONIC DESCENT. A priest could marry into any tribe. Yet, it was thought commendable if he married a wife who came from a priestly tribe.
    3. BOTH WERE RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD -- BLAMELESS, (vs. 6; comp. Gen. 17:1 I Kings 9:4; Acts 23:1; 24:16; Phil. 3:6). They were part of a godly remnant that was left in the nation, (Isa. 1:9; 10:22; Rom. 1l:5).
    4. ELISABETH BEING BARREN, THEY HAD LIVED INTO OLD AGE, CHILDLESS.
      1. This was a burden to them; the Jews considered it a "reproach".
      2. But they were not the first faithful ones in Israel who had been under such a burden. (Consider Abraham & Sarah; Isaac & Rebekah; Jacob & Rachel; Elkanan & Hannah; Manoah & his wife.)
II. A FAITHFUL MINISTER IS SEEN IN THE SANCTUARY, (vs. 8-10).
    1. ZECHARIAS HAS FAITHFULLY EXECUTED THE PRIESTLY OFFICE -- as unto the Lord, (2 Chron. 8:14; 31:2).
    2. HIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY HAD COME TO BURN INCENSE.
      1. This was one of the highest functions of the priest's office. (There were then some 20,000 priests -- compared to 3 in the days of Eli; I Sam. 2:12-13; 4:4). Four priests served 6-hour shifts daily in 8-day courses.
      2. Incense symbolized the prayers of the peop1e ascending to God, (Psa. 42:2; Ex. 30:7-8; I Sam. 2:28; I Chr. 23:13; 2 Chr. 29:11; Rev. 8:3-4).
    3. AS HE BURNS INCENSE, A MULTITUDE OF PEOPLE WAIT OUTSIDE - PRAYING.
      1. In the court of the Temple they wait in silence, (Lev. 16:17).
      2. In spotless robes, one priest is before the altar of burnt offerings -- the bells on his robes indicating his movements.
      3. Zecharias burns incense in the Holy Place, at the Golden Altar.

      1. Through the sacrifice of Christ, minister & people may now worship together, (Heb. 4:14; 9:24).
III. THE APPEARANCE & ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN ANGEL, (vs. 11-17).
    1. GABRIEL APPEARS TO ZECHARIAS, (vs. 11-17).
      1. The angel stands on the RIGHT side of the altar, (Ex. 30:1). This was regarded as the "favorable" side (Acts 7:56; Psa. 110:1). The left side was that of doom, (Matt. 25:34, 41).
      2. Zecharias was troubled by the angel -- a natural reaction, (Judg. 6:22; 13:22; Dan. 10:8; Lk. 1:29; 2:9; Acts 10:4; Rev. 1:17).
      3. Commanding him to "Fear not!" (comp. Lk. 1:30; Matt. 1:20; Lk.2:10; Matt. 28:5); the angel then spoke words of joy and comfort. His prayer is heard, (comp. Gen. 25:21; I Sam. 1:19); Elisabeth shall bear him a son who is to be called "John".
    2. THE PROMISE CONCERNING THIS SON, (vs. 14-17).
      1. Joy and gladness will be connected with his birth, (Lk. 1:58).
      2. He shall he great in the Lord's sight, (Matt. 11:11); drinking no wine or strong drink, a Nazarite (Num. 6:3; Judg.l3:4; Lk. 7:33); He shall be filled with the Spirit from his mother's womb, (comp. Jer. 1:5; Gal. 1:15).
      3. Through him many in Israel shall turn to the Lord, (Mal. 4:5-6).
      4. He shall go forth in the spirit & power of Elijah (Matt. 11:13-14; Mk. 9:12); turning the hearts of the father to the children -- the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; thus, making ready a people for the LORD, (Isa. 40:3; Amos.4:l2; 2 Tim. 2:21; Jn. 10:41; Lk. 7:28). HOW WONDERFULLY DID JOHN FULFIL HIS TASK!
IV. DOUBTING THE ANGEL, THE PRIEST IS PUNISHED, (vs. l8-20).
    1. LOOKING AT CIRCUMSTANCES, HE FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE. "WHEREBY?" he inquired, (vs. 18; comp. Gen. 17:17).
    2. THE ANGEL IDENTIFIES HIMSELF AS "GABRIEL" -- that stands in God's presence (Dan. 8:16; 9:21-23; Matt. 18:10; Heb. 1:14); he is sent as a bearer of "good news" to Zecharias.
    3. DEMANDING A "SIGN" (suggesting unbelief) THE PRIEST WILL BE UNABLE TO SPEAK UNTIL THE ANGELIC WORD IS FULFILLED. What terrible burdens do men bring upon themselves through unbelief!
    V. A MUTE PRIEST STANDS BEFORE A WAITING PEOPLE, (vs. 21-23).
    1. THEY AWAITED HIS RETURN & THE USUAL BLESSING, (Num. 6:22-27). Though the smoke of the incense indicated the completion of the sacrifice, they noticed an unusual delay.
    2. SEEING THE PRIEST UNABLE TO SPEAK, THEY CONCLUDED THAT HE HAD SEEN A VISION. He motioned a blessing, but spoke no word.
VI. COMPLETING HIS MINISTRY AT THE TEMPLE, ZECHARIAS RETURNED HOME IN TOTAL SILENCE -- to await the fulfillment of Gabriel's words.
    1. SOME TIME LATER ELISABETH CONCEIVED -- hiding herself 5 months.
    2. SHE REJOICED THAT GOD HAD TAKEN AWAY HER REPROACH, (Gen. 30:23; Isa. 4:1; 54:1-2).
CONCLUSION: The divine wisdom & discipline of DELAY is sometimes a blessing in disguise - bringing added strength (Isa. 40:31); deeper knowledge (Psa. 73:17); and richer answers, (Hab. 1:2; 3:2-19).
